Our nation is pioneering an innovative approach, blending ancestral knowledge with modern AI, to push back against environmental degradation.
The Ministry of Environment, Green Economy, and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Institut de Recherche en Sciences Appliquées et Technologies (IRSAT), has launched the 'Baoré AI Initiative.' Baoré, in Moore, signifies 'protection' or 'shelter,' a fitting name for a project designed to safeguard our precious lands. This initiative deploys AI-powered satellite imagery analysis to monitor land degradation, predict drought patterns, and identify optimal locations for reforestation efforts and sustainable agricultural practices.
“For generations, our elders, the 'Taan-ba-tenga' – 'those who know the land' – have understood the rhythms of nature and the signs of impending scarcity,” explains Dr. Alassane Compaoré, a leading geoinformatics expert at IRSAT and a respected elder from the Oubritenga province. “The AI is not replacing this wisdom; it is amplifying it. It processes vast amounts of data – rainfall, soil composition, vegetation cover – far beyond human capacity, allowing us to make decisions with unprecedented precision. It’s like giving our 'Taan-ba-tenga' an all-seeing eye.”
The program utilizes machine learning algorithms trained on decades of historical climate data, satellite imagery from agencies like the European Space Agency, and even local meteorological station readings. It can detect subtle changes in vegetation health weeks before they become visible to the human eye, enabling proactive interventions. For instance, in the Yatenga region, the AI identified areas at high risk of soil erosion, prompting local communities, guided by the Ministry, to implement 'zaï' techniques – traditional planting pits – reinforced with modern terracing, preventing significant land loss during the last rainy season.
Fati Ouédraogo, a farmer from the Ganzourgou province, shared her experience: “The local agricultural extension agent, using data from the Baoré system, advised us on which crops to plant and where, based on soil moisture predictions. Our yields have been more consistent, even with the unpredictable rains. It’s like the land itself is speaking to us through this new technology, helping us to be better stewards, as our ancestors always taught.”
Critics often raise concerns about data privacy and the accessibility of such advanced technology in rural areas. However, the Baoré initiative is designed with community engagement at its core.
