Senegal's AI Leap: Local Languages & Digital Inclusion Drive 'Jàngal' Initiative

DAKAR, SENEGAL – The digital drumbeats of innovation are echoing across Senegal, as the nation takes a significant stride into the realm of Artificial Intelligence with its ambitious 'Jàngal' initiative. This groundbreaking program, whose name translates to 'Teach' or 'Learn' in Wolof, is not just about adopting AI; it's about indigenizing it, ensuring that the benefits of this transformative technology reach every 'nit ku nekk' (every person) in our 'réew' (country).

For too long, the narrative of technological advancement in Africa has been one of consumption rather than creation. But as a 'Wolof Senegalese man' who has witnessed the resilience and ingenuity of our people, I can attest that 'Jàngal' represents a pivotal shift. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Telecommunications, in collaboration with the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) and the Agence De l'Informatique de l'État (ADIE), the initiative focuses on developing AI models trained on local languages like Wolof, Pulaar, and Serer.
