BOGOTÁ, Colombia – April 22, 2026 – The relentless march of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across Latin America is prompting critical conversations, and in Colombia, it's mujeres who are leading the charge for ethical and inclusive development. From the bustling tech hubs of Medellín to the governmental halls in Bogotá, a distinct Colombian perspective, deeply rooted in social justice and gender equity, is shaping the regional discourse on AI governance.

Historically, technological advancements have often overlooked the unique needs and contributions of women, particularly in developing nations. However, this time, Colombian women are ensuring their voices are not just heard, but are foundational to the AI revolution. "We cannot afford to build AI systems that perpetuate or exacerbate existing inequalities," states Dr. Sofia Rojas, Director of the 'InnovaMujer' initiative at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. "Our focus is on creating AI that understands the nuances of our diverse society, respects our cultural heritage, and actively works to close the digital gender gap, not widen it."

Dr. Rojas’s sentiment is echoed by government officials and civil society leaders. Just last month, during the 'Foro Regional de IA Ética' in Cartagena, organized by the Ministerio de Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones (MinTIC), a significant portion of the agenda was dedicated to gender-responsive AI frameworks. Patricia Gómez, a senior advisor at MinTIC, highlighted the importance of data sovereignty and bias mitigation. "When we train AI models on data sets that are predominantly male or Western-centric, we risk creating algorithms that fail to serve, or even discriminate against, Colombian women – from healthcare diagnostics to financial credit scoring. Our 'Política Nacional de Datos' is being updated to address this proactively."

This proactive stance is crucial, especially as AI applications are being piloted in critical sectors. For instance, in rural areas, AI-powered agricultural tools are being developed to assist campesinas with crop management. However, concerns have been raised about the accessibility of these tools and whether their interfaces are intuitive for users with varying levels of digital literacy.

Organizations like 'Mujeres Digitales Colombia' are working directly with communities to bridge this gap. "It's not enough to just develop the technology; we must ensure its equitable adoption," says Laura Montoya, co-founder of the organization. "We are seeing incredible potential for AI to empower women entrepreneurs and small business owners, but this requires tailored training programs and infrastructure that reaches even the most remote veredas."

Experts also point to the need for greater representation of women in AI research and development roles. "We need more ingenieras and data scientists who bring a lived understanding of women's experiences to the design table," explains Dr. Elena Pérez, a leading AI ethicist at EAFIT University in Medellín. "This isn't just about fairness; it's about building more robust, relevant, and ultimately, more successful AI for our nation and the wider South American region."

As Colombia continues its digital transformation journey, the commitment of its women leaders to an ethical, inclusive, and culturally sensitive AI ecosystem serves as a powerful model, not just for the region, but for the world. Their efforts ensure that the promise of AI truly benefits all colombianas.
