ASTANA, April 22, 2026 – Kazakhstan is rapidly emerging as a regional leader in digital transformation, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the forefront of its economic development strategy. This push is not merely about technological advancement; it's deeply intertwined with the nation's commitment to inclusive growth, particularly for its burgeoning cohort of women entrepreneurs.

The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovations and Aerospace Industry (MDDIAI) recently unveiled its 'Digital Qyz' initiative, a comprehensive program designed to equip Kazakhstani women with the AI and data science skills necessary to thrive in the modern business landscape. "Our goal is to ensure that AI serves as an equalizer, not a barrier," stated Aigul Sarsenova, Head of the Digital Transformation Department at MDDIAI, during a recent press briefing in Astana. "We recognize the immense potential of our 'kelins' and 'apkes' in driving innovation, and AI literacy is paramount to their success in the global digital economy."

This initiative is particularly vital in a region where traditional roles can sometimes limit access to cutting-edge technology. By partnering with institutions like Nazarbayev University and the Astana Hub International Technopark, 'Digital Qyz' offers tailored training modules, mentorship programs, and access to seed funding for AI-powered startups led by women. These programs address critical gaps, from basic digital literacy to advanced machine learning applications relevant to sectors like e-commerce, agritech, and creative industries – areas where Kazakhstani women have historically shown strong entrepreneurial spirit.

Dr. Gulnara Bakytzhanova, a leading economist and gender studies expert at the Kazakh National University, emphasized the broader societal impact. "Empowering women through AI is not just good for business; it strengthens our 'otbasy' (family) and 'el' (nation). When women are economically independent and technologically proficient, they uplift entire communities," she explained. Her research highlights how AI tools can streamline operations for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), many of which are run by women, allowing them to compete more effectively on regional and international stages.

One success story emerging from these efforts is 'Sheber AI,' an AI-driven platform developed by a team of female engineers from Almaty. 'Sheber AI' uses machine learning to connect rural artisans – predominantly women – with urban and international markets, optimizing logistics and pricing. "Before 'Sheber AI,' reaching customers beyond our village was a dream," shared Aizhan Omarova, a felt artisan from the Almaty region. "Now, my products are seen by buyers in Europe and Asia, all thanks to this technology that understands our craft and our needs."

As Kazakhstan continues its journey towards a fully digitalized economy, the strategic integration of AI with a focus on women's empowerment sets a compelling precedent. It's a testament to the nation's vision that technological progress must walk hand-in-hand with social equity, ensuring that every citizen, especially its dynamic women, can contribute to and benefit from the AI revolution.
